About this tool

Count an image’s megapixels and total pixels, and see what that means for printing. A table rates every common print size, from 4 × 6 inches to A1, by the resolution the image would have.

  • Works on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
  • Free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
  • No limits on file count or size beyond what your device can handle.

Questions and answers

How many megapixels do I need for a print?

For a sharp 4 × 6 inch print about 2 megapixels are enough, for A4 or 8 × 10 inches about 8 megapixels, and for A3 about 17 megapixels, at 300 pixels per inch.

Are more megapixels always better?

More pixels allow larger prints and tighter crops, but sharpness also depends on the lens, focus and light. A blurry 48 MP photo still looks blurry.

Is Megapixel Checker free?

Yes. Every tool on ImgImage is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you process.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are processed by your own browser and never leave your device. Nothing you open here is sent to a server.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. Large files are processed faster on a computer.
