How to use Remove Background
- Drop a photo onto the page, or paste it. The first time, the AI model is downloaded and saved in your browser.
- Press Remove background, and the people in the photo are cut out automatically. For any other subject, choose “Not a person? Tap to select”, tap it and press Done.
- Check the cutout with the before-and-after slider, fix any spot with Erase and Restore, choose a background and download the result at full size.
About this tool
Remove the background from a photo of a person in one click. A portrait matting model runs right in your browser: it finds the people in the photo, follows their outline down to loose strands of hair, and makes everything around them transparent at the photo’s full resolution.
For a pet, a product or any other subject, choose “Not a person? Tap to select” and tap what you want to keep: a second AI model selects the object under every tap. Keep the cutout transparent as a PNG or WebP, or put it on a solid color, a blurred version of the original scene or a picture of your own, and touch up any spot with the Erase and Restore brushes.

Questions and answers
Is my photo uploaded to remove the background?
No. The AI models are downloaded to your browser once and run on your own device, so your photo never leaves it. After the first visit the tool even works offline.
Does it work for pets, products and other objects?
The one-click cutout is made for photos of people, so it works best on portraits, selfies and group photos. For anything else, choose “Not a person? Tap to select”, tap the subject and press Done; extra taps, Remove taps or a box around the subject fine-tune the selection.
Why is there a download the first time?
The one-click cutout needs the portrait model and the engine that runs it, about 20 MB together. Tap to select uses a second, larger model (about 33 MB) that is only downloaded when you use it. Both are saved in your browser, so the next time they start right away.
How do I fix hair or edges the AI got wrong?
Choose Erase to paint away leftover background or Restore to bring back parts of the subject. Shrink removes a thin halo around the edge, Soften feathers hard edges, and Clean edge colors removes the old background’s tint from hair and fur. Your brush fixes stay when you switch between the one-click cutout and tap to select.
Which format should I download?
PNG keeps transparency and full quality and works everywhere. WebP is also transparent but much smaller. JPG can’t be transparent, so use it with a colored or blurred background.
