About this tool

Reduce an image to an exact number of colors, from 2 to 256. The palette is chosen for your picture with median cut and refined with k-means, and the colors are shown under the options so you can copy their HEX codes.

Floyd–Steinberg or ordered dithering mixes the palette colors in fine patterns to imitate the missing shades. PNG and GIF results are saved as compact palette images.

  • Works on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
  • Free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
  • No limits on file count or size beyond what your device can handle.

Questions and answers

Should I turn dithering on?

For photos with gradients, yes: dithering hides banding. For logos, pixel art or flat graphics, turn it off to get clean areas of solid color.

Will a reduced palette make my PNG smaller?

Usually a lot. With 256 colors or fewer the PNG is saved with a palette, which often cuts the file size by more than half.

Can I use the palette elsewhere?

Yes. Use “Copy HEX codes” to copy every palette color, one per line.

Is Quantize free?

Yes. Every tool on ImgImage is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you process.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are processed by your own browser and never leave your device. Nothing you open here is sent to a server.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. Large files are processed faster on a computer.
