About this tool

Remove all color while keeping the brightness of every part of the picture. The default luminance method weighs red, green and blue by how bright they look to the eye, so the gray image keeps the tones you see in the color original.

Other methods are available for special cases, such as averaging the channels or keeping a single channel, and the amount slider lets you leave a hint of color.

  • Works on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
  • Free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
  • No limits on file count or size beyond what your device can handle.

Questions and answers

Which grayscale method should I use?

Luminance is the most natural for photos. The classic TV weights match what many older programs produce, and a single channel can help when one color carries the detail.

Does grayscale make the file smaller?

A little, because there is less color information to store, but the savings are usually small. Use the Compress tools if file size matters.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. Transparent areas stay transparent when you save as PNG or WebP.

Is Grayscale free?

Yes. Every tool on ImgImage is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you process.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are processed by your own browser and never leave your device. Nothing you open here is sent to a server.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. Large files are processed faster on a computer.
