About this tool

Turn photos into retro pixel art. Choose how many big pixels fit across the image, then limit the colors to the photo’s own best colors or to a classic palette, such as an 8-bit console, a handheld green screen or an early PC.

Ordered dithering gives the checkered shading of old games. Save the result at the original size with crisp blocks, or as a tiny image with one pixel per block for game sprites.

  • Works on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
  • Free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
  • No limits on file count or size beyond what your device can handle.

Questions and answers

How do I get the sharpest pixel art?

Save as PNG. It keeps every block perfectly crisp and, because the colors are limited, the file is very small.

What does “1 pixel per block” do?

It saves the pixel art at its true size, for example 96 pixels wide, which is what you need for sprites and game assets.

Are the palettes exact?

They are close approximations of well-known hardware palettes, commonly used for retro art.

Is 8-Bit free?

Yes. Every tool on ImgImage is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you process.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are processed by your own browser and never leave your device. Nothing you open here is sent to a server.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. Large files are processed faster on a computer.
