About this tool

Recover what can still be read from damaged JPEG files. The tool fixes the structure of the file: it removes junk before or after the image, adds a missing start or end marker, drops broken metadata, adds the color coding tables that frames saved from video often lack, and rebuilds the file.

For files that were cut off, for example by an interrupted download or copy, the readable top part of the picture is kept and the gray area the decoder fills in can be cropped away. Each file gets a short report of what was found and what was recovered. Data that is missing from the file can’t be brought back.

  • Works on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
  • Free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
  • No limits on file count or size beyond what your device can handle.

Questions and answers

Can every broken JPG be fixed?

No. If the part of the file that describes the image is destroyed, or the image data is overwritten, there is nothing left to decode. The tool recovers everything that is still readable and tells you honestly when nothing can be saved.

Why is the bottom of my photo missing?

The file ends before the image does, so the rest of the picture was never saved. The decoder fills that area with gray; turn on cropping to keep only the real picture.

Does repairing reduce quality?

When only the file structure needed fixing, the original image data is kept with no re-compression. The picture is saved again only when it has to be cropped.

Is Repair JPG free?

Yes. Every tool on ImgImage is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you process.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are processed by your own browser and never leave your device. Nothing you open here is sent to a server.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. Large files are processed faster on a computer.
