About this tool
Make an animated GIF smaller without turning it into a slideshow. Each frame stores only the pixels that changed, identical frames are merged, and you can reduce the colors, scale the animation down or drop every second, third or fourth frame.
Lossy compression lets pixels that barely change keep their previous color, which removes a lot of flicker noise and saves the most space on video-like GIFs. The original and new size are shown as you change the settings, and the Result tab plays the actual compressed file.
- Works on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
- Free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
- No limits on file count or size beyond what your device can handle.
Questions and answers
How much smaller will my GIF get?
GIFs saved by simple tools often shrink by 50–80%. GIFs that are already optimized may only lose 10–30%; lowering the colors, scaling down or removing frames then makes the biggest difference.
Does dropping frames make the animation faster?
No. The time of each removed frame is added to the frame before it, so the GIF plays at the same speed, just a little less smoothly.
What does lossy compression do to a GIF?
Pixels that change only slightly from one frame to the next keep their old color instead of being stored again. Low values are hard to notice; very high values can leave faint trails behind moving objects.
Is Compress GIF free?
Yes. Every tool on ImgImage is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you process.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Your files are processed by your own browser and never leave your device. Nothing you open here is sent to a server.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. Large files are processed faster on a computer.
